Time to Talk Day is a reminder that talking openly about mental health can make a real difference. It doesn’t have to be a big or perfectly worded conversation. Sometimes, it starts with a simple question, a shared walk, or letting someone know you’re there to listen.

At Centaur Counselling, we see every day how powerful it is when people feel heard without judgement. Talking can reduce isolation, help make sense of overwhelming thoughts, and remind us that we don’t have to cope alone. Whether you’re struggling yourself or supporting someone else, starting a conversation can be the first step toward change.
It’s okay if talking feels hard
Many people worry about saying the wrong thing or opening something they don’t know how to fix. The truth is, you don’t need to have answers. Listening, showing curiosity, and being present are often more important than advice.
You might start with:
“How have things really been for you lately?”
“I’ve noticed you don’t seem yourself – do you want to talk?”
“I’m here if you want to share anything.”
And if today isn’t the day to talk, that’s okay too. Knowing support is available can still make a difference.
Support beyond Centaur Counselling
While counselling can be a valuable space for reflection and support, we also recognise the importance of community and accessible help. We’d like to highlight two organisations doing vital work in supporting mental wellbeing:
Samaritans
Available 24/7 for anyone who is struggling or needs someone to listen. You don’t have to be in crisis to reach out.
Call free on 116 123 or visit their website for online support.
Ely Walking Men’s Club
A supportive space for men to connect through walking and conversation. Sometimes talking side-by-side, rather than face-to-face, makes opening up feel easier. Groups like this play a crucial role in reducing isolation and building connection.
A small step can still be a powerful one
On Time to Talk Day, we encourage everyone to take one small step – check in with someone, share how you’re really feeling, or simply listen. Conversations don’t fix everything, but they can open doors to understanding, support, and hope.
If you’d like to find out more about counselling or how we can support you, Centaur Counselling is here to help.
Let’s keep talking – today and every day.
